The study of writing aims at enriching key writing skills, such as mechanics, paragraph development, organization, word choice, fluency, connections. More importantly, this course offers students an authentic community that can get them writing about high-interest topics and sharing their writing with others. From academic skills such as argumentative writing and writing research papers to more professional writing, you'll find it all here. There's even some help for better organizing and structuring writing as well as improving grammar. The five essential writing assignments here offer a set of unique and highly valuable work that will benefit middle school students in all content areas. A special emphasis is placed on the kind of assignments that are often required on state assessments—including personal essays and persuasive writing.

By the end of the course, you should:

  • Develop a writing project through multiple drafts by giving and acting on productive feedback to works in progress

  • Adapt writing processes and strategies for audience, purpose, and type of task

  • Develop knowledge of linguistic structures, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling, through practice in composing and revising

  • Write clear and appropriate thesis statements with a good text organization appropriately for genre, purpose and audience

  • Practice applying citation conventions systematically in your own work
